Cheers to that, a lot of good folk come from Mississippi.

This is going to seem un-Texan of me, but sometimes I admire the poverty of Mississippi. It makes (SOME) people appreciative of what they have and a simpler life. It makes Mississippians more resourceful and more connected to the environment.

Every time I visit family in Mississippi I am reminded of what made this country great. The internet speeds suck WAY too much for me to live in the parts that I would live in, but I do think the big tree farm we call Mississippi is filled with good folk.

Truth is, I didn't grow up poor, but had plenty of relatives that one could euphemistically call "salt of the earth types." I do see your point, though most of them would probably have been happier not having to barely scrape by most months. It's easier to praise the virtues from where we stand than from where they stand, right?
