If they had added the Cards within weeks of Nebraska pulling out the Big 12 would probably still have 12 members. Aside from the Cards themselves, they were a good bridge between Missouri and West Virginia and would have strengthened the north while giving WVU a rival and not making them the island they are now.

If the Big 12 stayed at 12, not too sure the B1G or SEC go to 14. Pretty sure Notre Dame stays in the Big East and you still have 6 conferences instead of 5. Cincinnati and Connecticut probably slid farthest down in the realignment saga.

They would have had to add WVU in place of Colorado too obviously, but I disagree. That conference was a sinking ship and it was only a matter of time
