He was feeding the crowd, Ole Miss student body, etc.. exactly what they wanted. Had the crowd not been completely hate filled racist, he would never have pushed that far because as you said he was all about his own ego/career survival.

Except the university was majority opposed to the riots. If you did your research there were a large number of professors and students that left the university after it happened.
