Does the fact that our Men's Basketball team is bad not bother anybody else?

I'm not saying that I DGAF about basketball or I don't care about USC's specific basketball team, it's quite the opposite. I've sat here the past couple years watching some of our games and I'm just kinda numb to it. I had 0 expectations for Frank's team last year, he was dealt a shitty hand with transfers and the team was already really bad.

Then this year, I didn't have world beater expectations for the team, I was just hoping to win more games than the year before. However, when Ellington decided to go Pro (and I don't fault him for that,) and then Tyrone tearing up his leg...I knew then our season was fricked...we lost our top 2 PG's.

For the most part, I see guys out there hustling, but I also see a team that really struggles to finish games. It's a really young team, I think they're the youngest in the SEC, but I'm not sure.

I don't think we're far off though. A couple more really solid recruits next year, another year for those guys to practice together (somebody is going to have to fill Williams role or hopefully really improve upon it,) and we might have a team next year that can get above .500. That's actually my goal for the team next year, I'm not expecting an Elite 8 berth or something crazy, just be better than .500. Now in year 4 of the Martin era, he's going to have to have a NCAA Tourney team, or at the very least a team that was on the bubble the last week.

All I know is that I expect a team that is at least one of the 64 best teams in the US more than once every 10 years.

I thnk that's fair, but would you be discouraged if it didn't happen next year?

I've never actually be a huge basketball lover myself so before CFM I didn't care to much about the program. I would tune in here or there to watch a game & did go to most games when I was a kid during the Odom era. This team's shown flashes of being a competitive team, but just haven't been able to close out games. I expect this team to take steps forward but doubt a postseason appearance next year, would expect one in the 15-16 year though. We need a consistent big desperately, Carerra & Kacinas have played well as of late imo but we need more at the position. Also need to find away to miss Brentons production.

It bothers me but I'm not discouraged. It takes good players to win in our conference. We need big guys that can finish around the basket along with wings that can shoot. We are a hard nose basketball team that likes to get into the paint, but we need more than one trick. I don't expect us to be in the tourney next year either unless we find some shooters but the year after that we should be at least on the bubble.

Not next year. Next year I expect at least an NIT. But at the same time I think a graphic on TV showed that we are missing up to 8 players that could've been on this squad. Some got hurt, one left for the NFL, a few were cut.

We are the definition of depleted and the average 18 of our players has to be like 18 or 19. Martin's recruiting isn't bad but it needs time to develop.

We were bottomed out pretty bad at the end of the Horn tenure.

I came into the season expecting to at least be .500, but also with a real chance at the NIT. those hopes were quickly dashed.

I've built up a tolerance for it.

I went to game all the time during the Odom and early Horn years. But by 2011 I was tired of getting worked up for shite teams, and we no longer had an entertaining player like Devan Downey that was worth watching despite the loss, so I quit attending games and following the team closing.

I've followed the team way more this year than I have since the 09-10 season, and it only reminded me of how frustrating it is to watch.

I hope we're better next year. I want an NCAA tourney bid in the next 3 or 4 seasons, but if theres not significant improvement next season (at least .500, NIT tourney preferred) then I don't see it happening.

Sadly, I've just gotten used to it. I miss the Fogler days when we had Frank McGuire Arena rocking. Even though the Colonial Center is nice, it hasn't really had that electric atmosphere that McGuire Arena had.

To be honest, I'm not sure that Frank Martin is the answer for our program right now. I'm willing to give him another year, but I really wish we would have gotten Greg Marshall when he was ours to get...and we should do whatever it takes to get him if we can in the near future.

To me it boils down to us not having any big guys who are worth a damn. The Lithuanians and their style of play don't translate well to the physical style of American and SEC basketball. We haven't had a good big man since who? Kitchens? That may even be a stretch. All of the big guys we recruit are skinny and soft. We need some Patric Young's and guys like the big man from LSU. Until we get that, we will continue to struggle.

I think Frank needs at least two more years, and then we can re-evaluate. Thornwell is a stud, Notice and Shaw are solid, and some of of the others have potential. Not quite time to call it quits on Frank, but he needs to get some big guys with some talent and toughness in the program.

It bothers me, and I want badly for the MBB team to improve and become relevant, but I also understand what's necessary for the program to improve. Horn had the one year, but then it started steadily declining from that point on. I knew Martin's first few years would be tough, and also understood how this season was pretty much a total start-over based on how many players transferred out.

I expected the team to not appear to improve much this season over last, and I'm getting what I expected. Coach Martin needs to settle on a roster of players he feels he can develop, and then take it from there. IMO he pretty much has that initial roster and has sent out messages all season long despite the mounting losses that he likes the players and can build on what they've started.

The mid-season losses of Ellington and Johnson were substantial. They were essentially the top 2 most experienced PGs on the roster. Next season we'll get Johnson back, will have a more experienced Notice, and will add a talented Stroman to the depth.

We need to add more offense to what we have with Thornwell, esp. with Williams graduating. We need more size and rebounding on the roster, and IMO we'll then have the foundation to move forward from and show what Coach Martin can do for the program. But it will take more than next season, unless the staff can find at least one legit big man to add to the incoming class....

It bothers me. I think the colonial centers size is a major problem and a disastrous waste

It would be full to the fricking brim if we'd have hired Greg Marshall when the opportunity shite on our fricking doorstep.

Yep. I wanted him here when Odom was canned, and Marshall took the job at CofC for a few minutes. When it was open again after Horn, I really wanted Marshall, but understood going after Martin instead.

I think Martin is going to be a good coach, but holy shite did he have a bunch of garbage that he had to clean up. I keep reminding myself of just how dreadful the women's program was under Walvius. If Staley can come in and do what she's done with that program, then there's no reason to believe that Martin can't. If, of course, we believe he's The Guy.

Hopefully we'll show some serious improvement last year. I've been impressed with the effort level in several of the games this season, so I'd like to think that with another year of development and some more talent, that we'll be much more competitive next year.

Here's hoping.

Also, saw this on the Garnet and Black Attack.

Since it's pertinent...

Martin's last position made him look far better than what he is. He had all kinds of talent just falling from trees in that area. And all he had to do was pick it up. Mark my words he will not take us to the tourney not even once. Your chatting with a guy who was lightly recruited by Eddie Fogler yet I was good enough to get offers from Big 10 schools. So that should tell you a lot about the great divide in talent and coaching we now have in this program. Only 1 player on this team would have kept a scholly when Fogler was here, bottom line.
