I think the most likely reason he is willing to negotiate is Auburn wants him to fire some assistants and he doesn't want a bunch of board members forcing people on him that he doesn't want to work with.

So yeah, he could say frick you pay me and get fired but then that would just get his entire staff fired too. I doubt he wants to frick over everyone he has hired like that.
