I believe ESPN policy is to use the Coaches poll until the CFP starts releasing their poll and then they use that. At least that is what they show on the screen (RC is probably right that they speak to whatever for hype's sake).
We were 22 in last week's CFP poll. So that's what they showed on the screen.

I always thought they use the AP poll until the CFP poll

That makes sense. I had assumed it was either AP or coaches
