She has handled high school emotionally disturbed before in TX. She's handled all aspects of SpEd and is gifted at it (15yrs doing the j o b). Oconnee seems very highly rated and might be one of those districts where someone has to retire or die for a slot to open up. That is ideally where we want to end up (Bogart area).

Brick, here's the deal.

I grew up in Clarke County and attended Clarke County schools. My wife started out in Clarke and her family moved to Oconee to get away from that cesspool. We live in Oconee now for the schools.

Clarke County schools have a VERY bad reputation. About a 25-35% dropout rate, kids from primarily poor African-American communities where the parents don't give a shite what their kids do and thus, the kids run buckwild. Lots of in-school violence, fights, etc. Saw my fair share of student-on-teacher violence in my day, too. And that was 20+ years ago. It's only gotten worse.

Oconee County...completely opposite. Most of the upper-class folks have moved away from Clarke to get their kids into Oconee (like my wife). It's not one of the best school districts in Georgia...it's arguably THE best district in Georgia. The grades are there, the test scores are there, the programs are there and the parents actually give a damn. And at the end of the day, it's the parental involvement that is going to make or break a teacher's will. Most teachers I know who have gotten burned out did so because they finally got tired of trying to be the voice of reason in a child's life where their home life counteracted all of their efforts.

Check these out to get a better picture. These are district ratings, but you can delve into individual schools as well.

Bottom line: If she gets an offer to Oconee County, she needs to TAKE IT. And stay the hell outta Clarke if at all possible.
