Yep, I could not ignore this post either.

First, let say that I respect your opinions and enjoy most of your posts. And while your observations/perspective might well be accurate, that does not make them correct in terms of what is best for our football program.

You might recall that I am a UGA alumnus, class of 1975. So yes, I am an old fart. I had no experience with drugs in HS because they were not available in our area during the 60's. However, I experienced almost anything and everything during my college years in the 70's. So I speak from experience when I say that drugs absolutely had a negative impact on my performance in college and life itself.

I am well aware of the trend towards legalization of marijuana but regardless the negative effects are well documented: LINK Like alcohol, some are more tolerant than others but no matter how you spin it, THC and just the smoke in your lungs from smoking pot have significant negative effects on your health and ability to perform optimally.

Having said this:

quote:

I've said this before in the recruiting thread, but I'll say it again here. If we stop recruiting all the players who we think smoke pot, we will have a really bad team.

Then all I can say is so be it. But the truth is none of us know for sure how pervasive the issue is among our players.

quote:

I really think some people don't realize how pervasive this is in not only college but high school as well. This is a cultural thing among young people.

Then the culture needs to change and if all learning institutions enforced both their academic standards and athletic rules then we might actually see a positive cultural transformation. Perpetuating a cultural which is arguably one of the root causes of the social demise of our nation is not doing these young men any favors.

quote:

He let his teammates down, but he probably didn't see it that way.

Then he is not looking at the situation realistically.

quote:

I can pretty much guarantee you that he was smoking with other members of our team. I bet if you randomly drug tested all our scholarship players, over half of them would fail. Maybe well more than half.

He might have been and everyone violating team rules and the law of the land should be suspended; I don't care how many it is. Scholarships should be revoked for repeat offenders.

I have said it many times but discipline is one of the fundamental aspects missing from Richt's teams. And again I'm not talking about the discipline of punishment after the incidents. I'm talking about instilling daily discipline which changes the culture of our program heading off incidents before they even happen. A truly disciplined individual wouldn't even be thinking about violating team rules rather their main focus would be academic and athletic achievement which is what it means to be a student athlete on scholarship.

We would never win another game if we took this stance. Are people really this ignorant? Get off your pedastool and put down your pitchforks.

Good lord, how much "discipline" was down at UFAG when Urban won 2 MNC's? Harvin,Hernandez etc were pretty much doing whatever the hell they wanted to on and off the field...How bout LSU under Les?
Honey Badger and Jeremy Hill were both stellar examples of dicipline weren't they? It's the world we live in and if you want to start kicking guys off the team fine...Auburn,LSU and many others will be there with open arms and a scholarship ready.
