Likewise. JHC was probably a pothead when we recruited him which raises the question do we test recruits for drugs before "hiring" them? Many businesses do drug testing of new hires for good reason; they don't want drugged out employees infiltrating their work environments.
This is another reason why our realized results don't match our recruiting rankings. Way too many of our recruits end up not contributing on the field for various reasons and drug use is certainly one of them.
I've said this before in the recruiting thread, but I'll say it again here. If we stop recruiting all the players who we think smoke pot, we will have a really bad team.
I really think some people don't realize how pervasive this is in not only college but high school as well. This is a cultural thing among young people. I smoked pot almost every day in college and a good bit on HS.
He let his teammates down, but he probably didn't see it that way. I can pretty much guarantee you that he was smoking with other members of our team. I bet if you randomly drug tested all our scholarship players, over half of them would fail. Maybe well more than half.

This phrase I have an issue with, but other than that, I imagine that you're right - He's too shortsighted either to know or to care how much he's impacting those around him.

Yep, I could not ignore this post either.
First, let say that I respect your opinions and enjoy most of your posts. And while your observations/perspective might well be accurate, that does not make them correct in terms of what is best for our football program.
You might recall that I am a UGA alumnus, class of 1975. So yes, I am an old fart. I had no experience with drugs in HS because they were not available in our area during the 60's. However, I experienced almost anything and everything during my college years in the 70's. So I speak from experience when I say that drugs absolutely had a negative impact on my performance in college and life itself.
I am well aware of the trend towards legalization of marijuana but regardless the negative effects are well documented: LINK Like alcohol, some are more tolerant than others but no matter how you spin it, THC and just the smoke in your lungs from smoking pot have significant negative effects on your health and ability to perform optimally.
Having said this:
Then all I can say is so be it. But the truth is none of us know for sure how pervasive the issue is among our players.
Then the culture needs to change and if all learning institutions enforced both their academic standards and athletic rules then we might actually see a positive cultural transformation. Perpetuating a cultural which is arguably one of the root causes of the social demise of our nation is not doing these young men any favors.
Then he is not looking at the situation realistically.
He might have been and everyone violating team rules and the law of the land should be suspended; I don't care how many it is. Scholarships should be revoked for repeat offenders.
I have said it many times but discipline is one of the fundamental aspects missing from Richt's teams. And again I'm not talking about the discipline of punishment after the incidents. I'm talking about instilling daily discipline which changes the culture of our program heading off incidents before they even happen. A truly disciplined individual wouldn't even be thinking about violating team rules rather their main focus would be academic and athletic achievement which is what it means to be a student athlete on scholarship.
