Can anyone tell me the point of this? I'm really not understanding Gus' reasoning on wasting plays with this formation. We run a read option, isn't the defense already having to decide if we're going to run with the QB or just hand off? Plus my guess is that it's predetermined what we're going to do and Gus isn't trusting CAP to make a read whether to keep it or hand it off.

I agree. Since you have Marshall back there already, I see no reason to bring in a RB to run essentially the same zone read play. Marshall is faster and more experienced at doing it. The Wildcat is only useful when you have a QB that can't run it. AU is in the "Wildcat" all the time because of Marshall.
Only thing I can think of is maybe NM needed to take a play off or maybe Gus wanted to talk to him. Purely a guess.

Agree. Made no sense to run that, especially at that point in the game. Was shocked he did that.

Don't want to see the wildcat ever again.

May have been the dumbest play of the game.

If it works, he's a genius for shaking things up

I agree Jonesy. Gus will come away from that a better coach IMO as well. I doubt he throws it out ever though. We know where we gotta improve.

It worked decently well through out the season.

I believe Gus wanted a word with NM and put CAP in to run that play instead of burning a timeout... smart strategy IMO

It almost worked. CAP was an arm tackle away from getting through the line and breaking it for 10 plus yards.
