Think you've got the cap 1 and Outback confused.
Cap 1 picks ahead of both bowls and gets the number 1 spot after BCS bowls. They take west teams fairly regularly.
Outback and Cotton essentially have the same spot with Outback having first dibs on East teams and Cotton having first dibs on West teams. This is why Cotton usually gets West teams and Outback East teams

So y'all were glad you didn't win the division? Since you got to go to a better bowl game because of it? I feel this may explain your school's performance.
