Does Murray deserve to have #11 retired?

1. The obvious one: he broke every meaningful SEC passing record. Accounted for 137 TDs in the past 4 years. Most efficient QB rating in UGA history. Good numbers.
2. Not football related, but he did a ton off the field. SEC Scholar Athlete, volunteered time to the Extra Special People program, etc.
3. Most importantly, the guy represents exactly what I envision when I hear Damn Good Dawg. He came back for a fourth year to try and win a championship, put the team on his back Marshawn Lynch style, started every game until a torn ACL took him down (although it took 15 plays) - and the whole time he did it because he loved UGA. He never won us the big game, but it's tough to find a guy who worked harder for UGA.
It's a sappy post but I couldn't be more proud of the guy. He worked his arse off for four years and despite all the shite he took about not being able to win the big one, you can't say he didn't leave it all on the field. Just my two cents, I'd love to see #11 immortalized like #34. What say you, Dawg fans?

Unfortunately, until David Pollack gets his #47 retired; I don't see how anyone else will get to have their's done first. You have to have the full package for a number to be retired-SEC & National records, Awards, SEC & National titles, and multiple All American and POY nominations. I love AM as much as the next Dawg fan, however he doesn't qualify for his number to be retired.

This. And if Murray would have led us to a natty, then I'd be for it.

No, he was great but not good enough to retire it.

That's a cool pic, did they retire all four at the same time?

No. That pic was at the retirement of Herschel's #34 in 1985. They all came back to take part in the ceremony.

In Murray's defense he had insufficient support from our defense. Still, he had an opportunity in the SECCG last season and could not execute a winning play in the clutch. Murray is a fine young man and a very good college QB but he fell short of greatest because he did not have enough big plays/wins throughout his career. You've got to at least win the SECC to be considered great and have your number retired.

Well I can see that. Exactly what is the criterion then, do you think? Theron Sapp's number was retired during his career and really the only special thing he did was beat Tech. Obviously that was long ago, and I don't want to see everyone's number retired but AM was special.

Excellent argument. Good points all around.

AM is the most prolific quarterback in SEC history and a fantastic representative of the University. How the frick is asking if his number deserves to be retired a shite question?

I dunno... maybe because there have been at least 3-5 other threads that have asked the exact same question since the beginning of the season.

Why was Theron Sapp's number retired again? Did he win the Heisman or a MNC?
