I thought the Collegiate Baseball poll came out today. It came out on Thursday, Dec 20 last year and Monday, Dec 19 2 years ago.
Surely we see it tomorrow...

Yeah, I'd guess tomorrow or Monday. You going up for the first series?
Posted on 12/19/13 at 11:30 pm to 17theBears
I'm not sure yet. Going to try to make 6-7 series this year, but haven't figured out a schedule yet...

I'm gonna try to make most games. It's my senior year so gotta get em while I can.

Seems about right. Surprised about Fullerton being #1 though.
Virginia is WOEFULLY underrated in this one. That team was largely freshmen last year...

Yeah I was surprised to see CSF at #1. They won't be #1 good at all imo. Virginia definitely should you pretty legit you would think.

I thought UVA would be preseason top 5.

Have they changed the bats/balls from last season? I remember a lot of people complaining about them.

I think everyone should post their projected starting lineup. I'll take a stab first.
C-Garner/Collins/Walker I fully expected them to split time all year unless someone just outright takes this position. Cohen claimed he was impressed with all catchers this fall. Don't be surprised if you see Randolph behind the dish either. He had a very good defensive fall as well as hitting .316. This position is honestly anyone's guess.
1B- Wes Rea
2B- Pirtle
SS- Britton/Heck We should have a good battle going here for SS
3B- Humphreys Highest batting average this fall. He's going to be a freak before he leaves.
LF- Henderson
CF- Bradford
RF- battle between Robson/Armstrong/Vickerson
DH- Detz/Garner/Walker- A lot of this will depend on match ups and who isn't catching.
Friday- Woody
Saturday- Fitts
Sunday- Hudson
A lot can/will change with our staff and rotation like it has every year under Cohen. Someone new and unexpected always emerges.
Super excited about this season, grinders. I got a chub typing this.

No -- they passed legislation to change the balls -- but will do so slowly to protect schools that have already ordered tens of thousands of dollars worth of the current balls. The first time the new ball will be used, I believe, is Omaha 2015.
The BBCOR bat standard is here to stay. That said, MSU dropped or 25+ year relationship with Easton this year and will be using Adidas bats -- and we're the only team in the country that I've been able to confirm has got them -- which is, I believe, kinda cementing our role as Adidas' flagship baseball school. The Adidas bats are on the ragged edge of the standard and are MUCH "hotter" than the Easton or Louisville Slugger versions.
Obviously, they can afford to push the boundary, because they aren't mass-producing them yet and a failed certification wouldn't really be a big deal -- whereas the major companies have to play it safe, since a failed certification could potentially really damage them with a recall...

Yours is pretty close to perfect IMO...
Only thing I'd add/change is that I expect Detz to be at 3rd quite alot, although I would prefer us jump in feet first with Hump here. I just don't think Detz has the feet or arm to defend small ball over there -- and his reaction time/range are pretty horrible. But based on what Cohen is saying, it appears that will happen...

Well one thing we know is Cohen is going to play who he wants to play whether its logical or not. Sam Frost had a throwing arm for 3rd base about like I do but that didn't stop Cohen from trotting him out there to play that position in roughly half or more of our games last year.

What better option did we have last year? If Norris had just hit like he was supposed to, it never becomes an issue. But he struggled mightily and left us scrambling to find another viable option.
Starts at 3b:
Detz - 26
Frost - 23
Norris - 20
Hann - 2
It was either -- go with Detz who is a liability with range or go with Frost who is a liability with arm strength. We just didn't have a well-rounded option. This year, I think we might(Hump)...and they say Detz has gotten better now that he's adjusted to the position, but we'll wait and see on that one...

Well after Norris was no longer an option I personally would have played Detz there consistently unless he just needed a break. It wasn't just Frost's arm strength it was also his accuracy. Frost consistently threw the ball away from 3rd for the 2 years he played over there. Yes, he had more range but it was not enough difference when he couldn't make normal throws that 3rd basemen have to make. The only time it was an advantage having him there was on bunts OR balls he cut off between 3rd and SS. And that's because on those plays he could use his quickness combined with the fact that in those situations the throw to first is significantly shorter. I'm just thankful Detz was over there at 3rd on the last out at Virginia or we many never have seen the CWS.

Range and defense is still a huge deal to Cohen. Rightly or wrongly. You can see it in who he plays in the outfield and basically sticks with regardless.
Range gets skewed in stats too -- because Frost could make plays to get to balls but throw them away for an E -- while Detz couldn't get there -- and it would simply go in the books as a base hit.
Personally, I want it to be Humphreys' job from day 1. Let him go through growing pains and learn on the fly in the non-con, so he's ready for SEC play. I think he's got SEC Freshman of the Year potential. Let Detz DH. That said, I don't necessarily expect to see that happen. So, I hope Detz has improved vastly at the position.
