Ole Miss will be a threat if Freeze can improve his play calling

I think most OM fans will agree with me that Hugh Freeze is not the best game manager. To many times on third and 2 have I seen him try a run out of the shotgun. This adds about 2 or 3 extra yards to the play, so third and 2 suddenly becomes third and 5. Take the snap under center and its a much higher percentage of execution.

He needs to limit his trick plays. Against Auburn, Ole Miss had first and goal on the 5. They first tried running the ball twice out of shotgun, and then a trick play. They tossed the ball to Treadwell, and he attempted to pass it. On the 5 yard line. Freeze had already run this play numerous time this season without getting successful once.

If Freeze had made better choices, Ole Miss would have beaten A&M, probably Auburn, as well as not being shut out by Alabama (Went for it 4 times when they were in field goal range)

if Freeze learns from his mistakes this season and improves his play calling next season, I see Ole Miss and Auburn battling it out for the west

Depth is what bit him this year. His playcalling has been questionable at times -- but the dude is still a young head coach in the SEC. One thing I've noticed about him is that he is generally very good about owning his mistakes over time. Owning them is the first step toward fixing them. Wish our HC did the same(he did at first -- but has become hardheaded as hell).

The problem for them was injuries on a depleted OL -- coupled with Bo Wallace's arm strength never fully returning this year(the deep threat was their single biggest weapon last year -- and he just didn't have quite enough to get it past defenders this year when he did have time).

Same questions going forward. 5 of the 11 "rotation" OL are graduating this year. They bring back 3 very, very nice pieces in Tunsil, Golson, and Morris -- but all 3 are currently down with injuries. Those 3 along with Bo's arm strength(and OL recruiting/development in general) are the things that will define how far they can go next year...

that is very true and i do respect how he own sup to his mistakes but I feel like he can be very risky and running out of the shotgun does not help. that killed him on that 4th down run with RN

I have a feeling once he has a few more recruiting classes that fit his offense less of his calls will look stupid. Some of them are questionable right now with our personnel, but with switchblade and stronger back like Wilkins third down will be less stressful.

with DK in at QB, i feel like he is a more mobile QB than Bo Wallace. Bo has made some nice run, but with Kincade I think the read option will be much better. Also, OM needs a bruiser running back. Y'all had that with Brandon Boldin but since him, Jeff Scott and Jaylen Walton are not really trucking over DL

He's learning. After the Alabama game, anytime we had a field goal opportunity he took it. Against Missouri he outthought himself a few times instead of running what had been working.

They've got several that are/can be PLENTY big enough to run between the tackles if they are built to do that. I think they made a mistake of kinda grooming the whole team for speed and turning everyone into scat backs after having a lot of success doing that last year.

IMO Mathers, Dodson, and Wilkins all have the frame to hold an easy 200 pounds -- which should be sufficient to run between the tackles when the OL is sufficient. They've also got Akeem Judd coming -- who is the very definition of a bruiser.

Yeah, OL depth hurt is this year. I love Freeze, but his situational playcalling doesn't always set his players up for success. The last two A&M games were extremely frustrating at the most pivotal times. It seems like he absolutely trusts the players to execute flawlessly under the stress of the situation. Maybe that works in pro football, but I think play calling has to be situational - call the play most easily executed in light of the flow and momentum of the game. Now, I realize that's not always easy - but some coaches have an innate feel for that. Freeze doesn't seem to at the moment.

my biggest problem is the screen pass. It works amazing. but he runs it so much. if you can jump the pass, pick six just like auburn did. Now it has worked for most of the season, but I just would not call it as often as he does

I agree but that's the only time the last two years it has happened. Freeze usually does a good job of calling the pump fake when defenses catch on.

and it does help that OM wide outs are great blockers but to me it just seems like he calls it once every other set of downs. He does not seem to mix up the play calling a whole lot.

dont get me wrong. I really like freeze and am excited to see what his is doing. I am currently looking for a job and I found one in Madison Mississippi and I am looking at it. If I move, I hope i can get up to some Ole Miss games.

If he would kick field goals against Alabama he'd have a better chance.

we have the #1 kicker in the nation headed out way next year so i am not worried about that. DK will be a boss. You just wait. He is a Barry Brunneti that can throw the ball, and run faster. The read option will be unstoppable

Sorant: Target should be announcing their new store in Madison just about any day now. Do you have experience in housewares or linens/fabrics?
