The face of college football is changing and that makes these kinds of looks back more interesting for reference.
It used to be major conferences such as the SEC, PAC, SWC etc would often only play 5 or 6 conference games per year and would often play 2-3 serious out of conference opponents from other conferences. Now we're seeing teams playing 8-9 conference games and 0-1 major out of conference opponents per year.
The bowl records are also interesting because you'll notice not all bowl relationships have been as constant as people like to pretend. The Rose Bowl for example advertises their Big 10 vs PAC matchup as a matter of tradition but this ignores the historical participation of other conferences (note Alabama, UGA, Tennessee, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, Penn....)
