Chancellor makes sense for Perry, President does not. Have to have the academic cred to be President and Perry barely has a Bachelors Degree. He could be a very effective Chancellor though, that job is about raising money and politics whereas the President is about working with the faculty and students.

I will say this, students at Mizzou will absolutely LOVE Loftin. He will go to every event he can on campus and support every sporting team and club. He loves to shake hands and just talk. Just a fantastic human being. He is definitely the type of guy who you leaves an impression, I would have to Google to remember who the President was when I was at A&M as the only time I was within 20 feet of him in my 4 years was when he handed me my degree.

BTW, Loftin was the "Anytime, anywhere" guy when asked about renewing the series with Texas. Guy has brass balls.

Loftin email to the students:

To the Aggie Family

When I announced, in July of this year, my resignation from the presidency of Texas A&M University, I noted that my love for students is and has been my primary motivation. At that time a return to the faculty and to teaching and research seemed the logical path for me. Since that announcement I have devoted a great deal of thought to how best to continue doing what I love -- serving students. Recently, a unique and exciting opportunity came my way, an opportunity to continue affecting the lives and futures of thousands of students, not just a few dozen enrolled in the classes I would teach or working in the laboratories where I would do research. While it is very difficult to imagine ourselves anywhere else but Aggieland, Karin and I have found a new home with many of the attributes of Texas A&M. Today the University of Missouri System is announcing that I will become the 22nd Chancellor of its flagship campus in Columbia, Missouri. As a Fightin' Texas Aggie, a piece of me will always be here, and my love for this university's students will not lessen. We look forward to maintaining the friendships we have forged here while we develop new ones in the State of Missouri. I will be leading the oldest public university west of the Mississippi, a land-grant institution that shares much with Texas A&M -- a rich history, membership in the Association of American Universities and the Southeastern Conference, an outstanding faculty and staff, and a passionate student body and alumni. We wish only the best for Texas A&M and for its students, former students, faculty and staff.

R. Bowen Loftin '71 President

Yeah I already love him and it is a terrific hire. I confess to not knowing much about how he is on managing the academic side of things, I'm sure he's competent but our previous chancellor Deaton was cut much more from that mold. Which was fine for academics but we were all VERY jealous during our schools' respective SEC moves of now Loftin handled things for you guys and how aggressive he was compared to the very wait-and-see, publicly passive way Mizzou's leaderhip played it. Mizzou's move was trickier and required more finesse, true, but Deaton just didn't have the commanding presence in interviews to give our fans much confidence that we were going to pull the move off.

This hire is a move that sends a clear signal that Mizzou is 100% committed to competing in this league moving forward and Loftin just by nature will always be right out in front leading that charge. I am very happy to have your honey badger join our ranks.

All that being said, I happen to have to driven through Loftin's hometown of Hearne, Texas a couple weeks ago on the way back from a work trip to Tyler and ummm....holy moly, that town is, in the least offensive way I can put it, a dump. One of the only towns in the country to have had a Wal-Mart store close b/c it was losing money...and that was back in 1990. Racial strife, economic woes, you name it seemed like that town has had it. It could really use Loftin to come down and be Mayor once his time as Mizzou is up and lead it out of the darkness.
