How long in this scenario before one goes full meltdown? In other words, how long do we have to head west and where should we head?
You have about 6 hours after the water pumps fail, however, with proper automatic controls in place, this might not actually happen for days after the shite goes down. A good rule of thumb is you have 24 hours to get out of harms way.
DO NOT head west. That won't do a damn thing. Here's a picture of where the reactors are.
Here's a picture of countries that use reactors or are planning too. (Any country that is not grey either has them or is building them.)
Think about getting off the mainland US. There are over half a billion potential threats on the mainland. Islands off the coast are a good rally point initially, but have a plan to get away from a hurricane threat and somewhere where the growing season goes year round.

Utah, Wyoming or Montana? Seems like they have pretty good buffers. Obviously, a zombie apocalypse isn't gonna happen. But airborne plagues certainly could. Still, everyone wouldn't go down at once and I'd have to believe it would be days, if not weeks, before any reactors actually became unmanned or failed otherwise.
