name a single other rivalry in sports that ONLY is around because the two teams play each other in the championship. not because of being next to one another or playing each other every year a bunch of times in the regular season. ill wait. im not the only one who thinks this way at all

Lakers vs Celtics was a great rivalry for a period of the 80s but frickin A how hostile can rivals that are on other ends of the country from each other and the respective fanbases never have any interaction together be? I'd put Yankees/Red Sox and Ohio State/Michigan and probably UNC/Duke basketball (because of proximity and dominant history of both programs) ahead of it as far as American rivalries. Florida/FSU is up there as well. Bama/Auburn is way up the list from an intensity standpoint.

They're separated by 3000 fricking miles. They don't really ever have to put up with the bullshite of the opposing fanbase. They just say to each other how much they hate the pther and run into each other once in a blue moon. It's a joke to compare that to any of the great college or European rivalries. The only one even in the contest of hatred between the fanbase a are the Yankees and the Red Sox.
