The football program is paying for it.

Football helps keep the money flowing at the schools, like it or not, which leads to better facilities for the whole student body. Without football, UA/AU might be like the Mississippi schools academically.

Kinda a silly argument since almost all of his salary is probably paid by donations to bama athletics.

Alabama's athletic department brought in $67.7 million in revenue and had a $7.1 million surplus the year before his arrival, according to figures compiled by USA Today. Last fiscal year, Alabama's athletic revenue was $124.5 million and its profit was $19.4 million.
Football alone produced $82 million in revenue and had a profit of $45.1 million.
The only college football programs with greater revenue than Alabama during the last fiscal year were Texas ($103.8 million) and Michigan ($85.2 million).

All the more reason to pay him more. Football revenues are recycled through athletic departments and then returned to the schools themselves. The schools then work to better the states they're in.
So, if a school like Alabama is seeing record football revenues (which inevitably make their way back to the school), why would investing more money in such a process be anything but good?
