exactly they garnered a few extra points in the ranking for things that really dont have anything to do with the worth of a school. ie acceptance rate
in actuality both schools are great academic schools, neither is really much better. Auburn does have higher admission standards and a marginally better incoming freshman resume. a few years ago it was much better, bama is closing the gap

Bama is definitely becoming a more academically respected school. They had ceded that to Auburn for a number of years.
Moreover, they're different institutions, similar to UT and TAMU. Auburn has obviously traditionally been the tech/engineering school, and Alabama gets the professional programs.

Pretty much. Never understood the pissing matches between the two fanbases on this, but that's what a rivalry gets you. Both have good programs, and both have joke programs. Both have very successful alums, and both have failure alums. Big deal.
Full disclosure, both accepted me in the early 90's and I didn't have that great of a high school resume. 2.4 GPA, 25 ACT, though I did get a 31 on the math portion.
