UK b-ball fans are like any other fan base of a one-trick pony institution (see Nebraska). The lunatics coalesce around team like flies to shithouse. And when it's pointed out, the retort is "jealous" / "hater" / etc.
The UK b-ball fan holds a special place on the moral hypocrisy front by whitewashing (and then embracing) someone they unquestionably hammered when he coached elsewhere.
As long as Suitcase Cal brings the wins the ridgerunners will whistle on, pretending it's not happening.
