We've had two of these calls so far. IMO one was justified and the other was borderline at BEST. If it's borderline, why would they toss someone?

Seeing all these lower tackles is just as scary but I guess the concussion phobia is too strong.

Why can't they just develop a helmet that works better?

All kinds of reasons. Companies don't have much of an incentive to do so (the NOCSAE has some pretty archaic guidelines) and it's difficult to pinpoint a change that would be uniform to everyone.

MIPS is an interesting concept because it reduces rotational forces (what makes it so hard to build a good helmet) by having basically a "fitted" cap inside the helmet that stays static with the players head while the "helmet" itself will slide/have enough give to keep things from "rotating".

It's interesting stuff, but in the easy way out for the NCAA is to make shitty rules.
