With 11 True Freshman in the 2 deep, is Snyders job safe? I have heard 0 rumors that we will be looking for a new D-coordinator.

I am usually an optimist, but I am not very impressed with our Freshman. Give them time to get used to the game, you say. I agree playing time and experience will help, but these guys arent showing much improvement through the halfway point.

I am content with just admitting our defense is going to be 100+ in final rankings.

Can anyone tell me how/why we would improve dramatically over the next 6 games? Im just not seeing it here.

Does Snyder lose his job is we are 100+ in FBS defense rankings or does he get a pass because of what he has to work with.

FYI I am not saying I want Snyder gone. Just saying that i must be missing something for that not to even be talked about. I understand our recruiting classes are starting to come in these next couple of years. But damn this is bad.

We won't.

Modern day football, given the talent of QBs and how much people throw the ball around, the single most import defensive skill set is the pass rush. Once you have a player or two that demands a double team, defensive scheme becomes so much easier. I won't fault a coach until I see something along the defensive line that can generate a consistent pass rush. It's bad now, but it can only get better.

No way. Snyder is safe for sure. Sumlin is on Sirius radio every week and he has been saying that we are playing way too many young guys out of necessity. We just don't have the luxury of redshirting freshman and we are physically under developed on the defensive LOS. Everything starts there.

Sumlin said that our will be 15 to 20 pounds heavier with much more muscle mass next year. He said this is the wrong conference to be starting true freshmen on the defensive LOS but we just have to deal with it for now. Things start to change and we start to physically catch up next year. Defensive LOS was one of the glaring talent holes left by Sherman. We all knew this before last season but guys like Nealy stepped it up big time when we needed it.

I actually think our run D is showing some signs of improvement. Arkansas had 202 rushing yards but they broke a couple of long runs when they got outside of contain. Ole Miss really didn't run the ball that well against us at all. The lack of a pass rush without totally selling out is a big problem for us. Really the only team I see ahead that will truly exploit this is LSU unless Franklin comes back and is effective for Mizzo. We outscore Mizzo even if they have Franklin back at 100%.

With all the inexperience, it's experienced players, such as Howard Matthews, Steven Jenkins, and Gavin Stansbury, that are killing us.

The talent will catch up next year. Snyder is a very good DC. The defense will be very good in the future. Plenty of talent is on the way.

Assuming we just need time for the talent on defense to catch up, how long should we expect to wait to start seeing a solid d every year? Next year? Year after? How many years of solid recruiting does it take to maintain a solid d?

I love Snyder. Hence me saying I dont want him gone. I am just a little shocked it has even been mentioned, as much speculating that goes on around college football and all.

This is the last year of Sherman recruits, yes? So what kind of window are you guys excepting to see results. I say we improve next year. Those freshman will have a whole offseason to bulk and work under Snyder, but still young. You thinking 2014 is a step forward and then 15' 16' we should be at the recruiting point to be able to maintain a reputable defense? Or I am being a little too optimistic here?

It's hit or miss depending on your ability to reload difference makers. Look at LSU's recruiting... and their defense is less than stellar this year. Hoza Scott, Myles Garrett, etc these players you have to have every year, and them not be busts, and then you have player like Claiborne turn out to be All-Americans. That's what it takes, and why recruiting matters. You have to recruit enough top talent guys that your busts don't hurt you, and enough good scouting to find three stars turned All-Americans.
