What happened with the B1G and Mizzou? Was it an academic (research program) thing, or was it more of Mizzou's choice? I heard both when the chaos was beginning

Personally, I respect the football prowess of Big 10, so it would not have been a disappointment to land there. But SEC allure and destination game sites was much more exciting. No one in their right mind would deny that the SEC has been the premier conference in the last decade.

I don't know if any of us fans know the real poop, but I have heard some talk about a junior membership offer (like was given to Nebraska) and we wanted no part of that.

I'm not too surprised, really. Mizzou has had way too much success in recent years under Pinkel to just fall off the cliff like it appeared last season. They had a lot of injuries last year, so I could see that having a big impact.

I will say also, though I expected them to rebound back to winning seasons, I didn't expect them to jump back THIS much! That wierd-o OC they had last season must have had them all screwed up....

The best info I had on expansion was that the negotiations had reached the point that the coaches had been advised they'd be coaching in the B1g the next season. And that's when the junior membership thing came up. They wanted to phase in the membership over several years, and the first year there would have been no conference revenue at all; it would have been 5+ years before full conference revenue was paid. We backed off at that point, and Nebraska bit. Nebraska is a big enough program to absorb that revenue hit; we weren't. The money issues killed it.

It's correct to say that it wasn't the attractiveness of the B1G as much as it was the desire to escape the big 12. No one thought the SEC would even be an option. When it came out that the SEC was a possibility? The fans and alumni went on a major campaign to push it, emails, calls, letters - the groundswell of support for the SEC move was huge.

Should add - yes, there was a contingent among the academic types that wanted the B1G. But that faction wasn't driving the bus on this. They were mouthy, but they were definitely the minority.

I don't think any but the crazies within Mizzou's own fan base would have put money on a 6-0 start before the season started.

FWIW...I did.

They have to actually play a decent team before one may refer to "level of play".

There is a significant contingent of Missourians who consider ourselves southern (leaning). That is particularly true in western and southern Missouri. The thought of joining the yankee B1G with a bunch of eastern rudeness didn't set well with me. Both Texas and Missouri are similar in their inability to fit into a category of States. But we fit better with the south than with the rust belt or east or west coast. The B1G didn't want us because we don't fit in there - at least I'd like to think we don't.

I have posted this before. Don't underestimate Missouri. We did in the Big 12 and they proceeded to beat us regularly.

We don't anymore and Nov 30 in Columbia will be a tough game.

I would like to suggest to Pinkel that he keep Franklin out of that game and save him for the bowl game.

It seems like they have a Texas pipeline for QB's.

Knock it off.

Of course the game on Saturday was a lose/lose for the Tigers.

Missouri gets blown out and the rant shouts "we told you so, it was all the weak schedule."

Missouri blows UGA out, and the rant shouts "Great job, you beat an overrated and delpleted UGA."

and both of those would have been true statements.

Not surprised at all. Last year there was discussion of them winning the East in their inaugural season. They were supposed to do what A&M did. The East is still in transition with Florida not quite back to form and Georgia losing so much on D, although it is more stable than it was a year ago. This year really should have set up to be Mizzou's year.

It's funny how we quickly forget.

Given their success in the Big-12 they should be expected by anyone who knows college football to be at least a middle tier SEC program with banner years when they have seasoned qb's like this one.

The issue with that offense is always keeping the qb healthy in a league with physical fronts. It's going to be tough unless you get a guy like JFF who simply can't be hit solidly or a Cam Newton who just runs over people.

What I am surprised by is their defense. They play with a chip on their shoulder and look to have maybe the best pass rush in the league. Will be interesting to see them play a team who can actually run the ball consistently (Georgia even before injuries never truly commits to the run like they should IMO).

Georgia's a great win. However, as with Mississippi State last year let's keep in mind their schedule up to this point.
