As others have said, too much of something can be a bad thing and that's the case with the glow and emboss effects that you've used.

The Auburn one looks the best of the bunch because it's toned down compared to the others. I'd shoot for more that style with the others.

Thanks, 'Belle. When I look at them individually they seem pretty decent, but when viewed as a set, they can be pretty overwhelming. At least I got the first fourteen completed and can now go back and start really putting some thought into it. I'm noticing that working with visual art is similar to recording an album. When finalizing a song, NEVER do the mixdown the same day as you've been recording! You need to step away form it and give your ears time to readjust. I guess the same goes for the eyes. (Good thing I'm not making a living at this. I have a feeling I'd be hungry rather often.)
