Sugar Bowl importance

Help me understand this.
Depending on which conference you're in, certain teams aim for the highest standard of their conference bowl game.
Big XII -Fiesta
B1G -Rose
SEC - Sugar
Pac 12 -Rose
ACC - Orange
With the success the SEC has had, I think most teams as of now (Bama, LSU, UGA, UF) are elite enough to set their standards on the title game then hope for the best in the Sugar Bowl. This certainly is the mindset of perennial title contenders in all conferences to get to the title game and if all else fails get to the best bowl game possible.
If you're a fan of a team like USC, Auburn, Miss St and so forth, how much of an importance do you place on the Sugar Bowl? For teams that are in the upper echelon of the SEC, do you view it as consolation prize if you don't get to the title game or win the SEC? For LSU fans, does this have a special meaning to you since it's played in NOLA? Just curious....
Sidenote: Aggie and Tiger fans opinion don't really count here since they are Big 12 transplants but feel free to comment on the Fiesta bowl back in your Big 12 days.

I would say the most important thing to any SEC team is win the SEC and you'll be fine, save bama(2011).

Bowls in general seem less important now than they did pre-BCS, even the "BCS" bowls like the Sugar Bowl. They all have a bit of an exhibition feel now that there is a "championship" game. In a way they have always had somewhat of an exhibition feel to me, but it's even more so now. Obviously, would rather go to the Sugar Bowl than any non-BCSCG bowl, but it definitely used to seem bigger.
The fact that it is rarely the SEC champion in the Sugar Bowl now contributes to this as well. Also the Sugar seems to get some less than desirable matchups lately too.

First goal is win the conference. Then let the chips fall as they may. Sugar Bowl has been the site of some of the highest highs in Bama history.

I think you are thinking about in context of the Big 10 where the pinnacle is the Rose Bowl. Thats what everyone shoots for up there.
Since the SEC championship game as all but become a BCS play in game the hope for LSU, GA, AL etc is to win that game and play in the BCS.
To a small extent the Sugar Bowl is for the team that places 2nd in the SEC - thus a bit of a let down.

Alabama had a massive amount of history in the Sugar Bowl. We've played there more than anyone, including LSU.

Given our recent success I think many Bama fans view a Sugar Bowl appearance as a letdown. When we lost GotC Part I the guy next to me screamed "frick! I don't want to play fricking Boise in the Sugar Bowl!"

Actually tied with LSU with 13 appearances each.

With Florida, I was a little disappointed with SB in 09 considering we were undefeated until SECCG. I actually was glad UF got to go to the Sugar bowl last year (considering how shitty 2010-11 were), but the final score sucked, obviously.

I agree with this 100%. I think you can look back across any BSC bowl game and see that most of the matchups weren't as desirable as people would have wanted which is a huge draw back of the BCS system.
Add in the fact that the title games are played at one of the four BCS game locations adds to another draw back by the system. Starting in 98' they should have just held all title games in one spot to mellow the exhibition feeling.

Conference bragging rights and positioning for the next season.

Starting next year, it's play-off or bust.

In some ways the BCS deflated the image of the historical major bowls. When Alabama was in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, I was both excited and disappointed. Excited to be back in a bowl that held importance to Alabama. Disappointed we got there after losing in the SEC title game.

I would say beating Tulane their usually equals a National Title for us.

For me, Number one goal is to win the SEC Championship. Bowl games, including the NCG, are consolation prizes.
2011 was a mess and I wish we went to Atlanta.

Disappointed with going to the Sugar Bowl or losing to Bama in the SEC championship game? I bet you Georgia fans wish they could have went to the Sugar Bowl last year after losing to Bama. Of course the BCS polls weren't in their favor then.

Would have been nice for them to actually show up and play. Have to listen to UL fans rave about beating UF all the time now...

Well, losing to Bama moreso, but I was really hoping to see Florida go back to back NCGs

Interesting fact. Didn't know this and a little surprised by it as well. With the amount of time the Sugar Bowl was associated with the SEC champion, I thought Alabama would have had several more appearances than any other team.
