At the funeral, they played his UGA highlights with the Battle Hymn in the background

Then carried the casket out to Glory Glory

The original story I heard was that he said he was going to kill himself, then dropped the magazine, but forgot about the one in the chamber...meaning it was a sick joke....not cool either way

I was just going through some old papers from back in the day. Kid was #1 recruit coming out High School in Ga that year. Hard to believe.

It is hard to go from top recruit to entry level job for a lot of guys. Not making excuses for what went down, but it is a tough transition for people to make.

How could that be if he fired one into the ceiling right before he put one in his head?

people don't always get the story straight....however, these same people told me about his death hours before it was reported...so there's that

If that story were true, the once he fired the "warning shot", the next round in the magazine would have been chambered. If he dropped the magazine at that point, he could still fire the one in the chamber.

A lot of accidental/negligent discharges happen because the basic rules of gun safety aren't followed. In this case, he didn't check if the gun was still loaded, and he pointed his gun at something he didn't want to destroy (if it was just a joke at that point).

Regardless, it is a sad story. I hope his family can recover.

The whole thing is just extremely depressing and I cannot imagine the pain that his children will have to suffer through for the remainder of their lives. They saw the man who brought them into this world blow his brains out in front of them and their mother. I am no mental health expert by any means, but clearly the dude had some underlying problems that we do not know about seeing as they stated in the article that it is not the first time that he threatened to off himself. I do not buy the story that he was "joking" around with the gun at all. It sounds like something that the family would say in the immediate aftermath of the incident due to the sensitive nature of the entire subject.

Only sad for his children. What kind of father would do such a thing in front of his kids.

If he didnt know a round is chambered after each shot, he should have never owned a gun. Hard to believe he didnt know that.

If he fired a shot into the ceiling, the spent cartridge was ejected by the slide coming rearward. Once the slide came forward another round is picked up off the magazine and loaded into the chamber. Even if you drop the magazine out, another loaded round is still in the chamber.
