If memory serves me right, and it almost always does, Mark Richt was a finalist for the Mizzou job when GP was hired.
Let's take a trip to bizarro world and imagine that within it, Mark Richt WAS hired at Mizzou. Leaving you to hire Gary Pinkel.
Do you believe that GP has the ability to get you where Richt has gotten you?
Transversely, fellow Mizzou fans, do you think Richt would have us where we are today?
I'll hang up and listen.

I've talked about this with a couple UGA fans. I'm generally drunk when I have these types of message board discussions, but I remember most of them.
I think we agreed that Pinkel and Richt were very similar coaches. Both run clean/family type programs, seem like good guys, and are often not the best coach on the field on gameday.
I think we're probably in a similar position today if we hired Richt instead of passing him up and going with Pinkel. I know Richt wanted the job and was disappointed to not get it, but he wound up in a better place. The difference between Richt and Pinkel can all boil down to the locations of the schools. It's a lot easier to recruit in Georgia than Missouri, especially with Mizzou in the Big 12, plus Georgia has a much stronger tradition.
If we'd gotten Richt we'd be in the same place we're in now with potentially a few more wins, and Georgia would likely be in the same place if they'd gotten Pinkel. I really think they're that similar.

Do you think we would have been in a position to join the SEC?
While Pinkel and company have driven me to the edge numerous times, I'll say this. Their uncanny ability to find a diamond in the rough is nothing short of spectacular.
2007-2010 got us in the SEC, due in large part to the "coaching up" of 2 and 3 star recruits. Could Richt do that?
I think UGA fans would know better than us.
I actually think about this question quite a bit. I may have even brought it up on the rant in a past life.

I don't know about that. Short of being winless sometime in the last decade I don't think the performance on the field had much to do with it. Perhaps the on field performance leading more people to follow Mizzou and making the brand itself more valuable is something, but I think the SEC is after Missouri the state and Mizzou the school more than Mizzou Tiger football.

Agreed. Eyeballs were a key component.
However, they wouldn't have let the 1985-2006 versions of MU football join the fray.

Richt would have had the same success, or lack of, recruiting to Mizzou as Pinkel had. And Pinkel likely would have had the same success recruiting to Georgia Richt has had.
Good players are plentiful here, and Georgia does have a good tradition and following.
But Richt had success at Fla State and players came to Georgia because of that the first few years. Pinkel might would not have had that advantage. Could he have worn an NC ring when he went to visit a recruit? Richt did.
As for current success, I think Pinkel or most any really good coach could have success with the quality player Georgia has put on the field the last 2 years.
I suppose we'll find out about the teams and coaches in a few weeks.

I do think Pinkel has probably done more with less. However, I think Richt is probably a little under-valued as a recruiter too just because he is in GA (I tend to sometimes think Richt is not a great recruiter just because he is in such a talent rich state and losses several of those guys, but I have to remember that his two best players are out-of-state guys).

I agree. People forget that he had Murray and Mettenberger at the same time. Arguably 2 of the best 3 qbs in the SEC right now. Also look at the players he put in the NFL
