They were making 3rd downs all day. I don't know why they didn't just dial up the crossing route pass plays every single time. We couldn't do anything with them and they were a guaranteed first down each time.

Don't blame our young D. Grantham's arse needs to be run off yesterday. Who rushes 3 on 3rd and 23. Stupid bastard!

I'm telling you...when we telegraphed the safety blitz on the first possession and Mett hit the TD it scared CTG and we didn't press like most of us wish we would have.

Lets remember though...we still got what? 4 sacks? Not too bad.

This! I have no doubt our young players will get better. I think CTG and his scheme is going to continue to hold them back.

The only thing good I can say about our use of the 3-4 defense is that it makes our players more desirable to NFL scouts whose teams run that scheme. Doesn't really help us, though.

I'm concerned with players not being lined up correctly. Lot of missed assignments.

Grantham's fault. Too complex. Just line up and freaking play ball. We have the athletes to do that!

Here's Grantham's explanation of the problems on 3rd down defense, courtesy of the Ledger-Enquirer blog. For what it's worth:

"We didn't get off the field ... because we didn't do the things that we've gotta do in that situation, and that's really mostly youth. And the combination of youth not playing the situation right, along with them being good, and making plays, kind of makes it the way it happens. That's why you have to coach resiliency and keep playing. If guys believe in you and your system and keep playing they've got a way to win the game."

"Basically there's only two scenarios that are going to happen there: One, they're going to throw it beyond the sticks on the route, or they're gonna make a catch and run play. Well, jams and re-routes are important, (and) we didn't jam the guys like we needed to. We didn't stay in the zones that we needed to. And we didn't read the eyes of the quarterback. And the guys stepped up and made a good throw. That's on us, and we've got to get better on that, because really in that situation there's nothing else to call."

I think Grantham learned his lesson after that 3rd and 23 because he didn't call that shite again the rest of the game.
