Another W for the Gamecocks, but don't think it is just another win over a low conference team.

The Gamecocks faced a team today, UCF, who were 3-0, coming off a road win against Penn St,

UCF came in ranked 7th in Pass Efficiency Offense, 34th in Passing Offense, 13th in 3rd Down Conv %, 22nd in Turnover Margin, 20th in Total Defense, and 12th in Scoring Defense. Also they're in the Top 20 for fewest penalties and penalty yards. They're disciplined and had a great QB.

They had nothing to lose and this was their Super Bowl. We were the highest ranked team in their stadium's history, 1 of only 11 sell outs ever in their team's history (since 1979) and on paper they actually matched up well with our weaknesses.

This was a GREAT low conference team, they'll end up with 10 wins this year, and dominate their conference opponents. Their RB, Storm Johnson, could be playing for alot of BCS programs right now. Broytles (sp) is a great QB, he had over 3K yards last year and had a higher QBR going into this game than Teddy Bridgewater.

With all that said, it's still only a part of why I liked our game today. The team needed a win like this. To come from behind, on the road, against a great team who was invested to win, and to do it when our guys were going down hurt...to fight through the adversity, even in the absence of Shaw and Wilds. To make the adjustments at halftime that allowed us to come out swinging in the 2nd...this was the kind of win the guys needed more than a 30 pt blow out.

What they'll get is a shite ton of confidence. Knowing that they were on the ropes, and the decked was dealing them bad cards, but still finding a way to get up 3 scores before garbage time, that was incredible.

Some of the teams I've watched in the past would've folded and lost this game, these guys came back hard and activated their BeastMode. If you take out the 160 yards (on the 2 passes) and 2TD's in garbage time, our defense did an outstanding job. We kept UCF's 3rd Down Conv % below .500 and we didn't lose turnover battle.

I liked MD28. And maybe.. just maybe SOS realized that we are a running team today. Hope Wilds and shaw come back soon, we need to run and and grind our opponents because our D is soft.

Gutsy win today and I agree 100% with your assessment CIYE

Any word on Shaw? I heard that Wilds may be back for Kentucky, but haven't heard a peep about Shaw.

We played okay except for the two long passes. Still a lot to work on but mike Davis is a monster.

I heard no fracture. Our 1-2 weeks. No link to confirm though, as I'm on my phone.

Gotcha. Spurrier called it a bruise and said Wilds dislocated his elbow. Just never heard a timetable on Shaw.

Yeah we don't have a team that gives up in games anymore, and they shouldn't. They also aren't unranked teams expected to have just another mediocre season, so they still have a bit to play for. The SEC-East is gone again, but they know winning 10-11 games and finishing in the top 10 establishes our program as one of the top ones in the SEC, so they shouldn't turn their backs on that. Still, not being a factor again for the division so early in the season is disappointing...

My impressions of UCF is "meh". They ain't all that. Sure, they have a winning record, a high-scoring effective offense, but so what? They are still a C-USA caliber program. Playing them on their field was unusual and typically not the type of atmosphere we play these teams in, so they got a little advantage there. But we were holding them to just over 200 total yds of offense into the 4th qtr., had just jumped up to 28-10 on them and they were tiring out. Just like any other C-USA opponent we play...

Then our defense relaxed a bit and they jumped all over us. That was frustrating. We let UCF make it a close game there in the end, just like we did with Vanderbilt. True quality teams don't take breaks in mid-games like that. We let those two games look like close contests in the end when they both really had no right to...

But yes we hung on and still won the game. It's an issue that can be worked on, I'm hoping. And it is different from the past where when an opponent jumps out to a lead, and the team just shuts down and calls it a day. But we still have a lot of work to do: we still have too much inconsistency on defense, but youth and inexperience usually will cause that.

Davis though is the real deal, IMO. As Real Deal as Lattimore ever was. How wonderful to have someone step in after Marcus and keep it all running along just as dominantly. Also liked how Byrd stepped up in place of Roland and had the best game thus far this season for him. Don't know what's up with Shaq.

Dylan was a bit shaky out there: I wonder how much it surprised him to have to take over the game this time. He surely didn't get a ton of 1st-team reps leading up to the game. UK next week might not be as tough as UCF was, especially being at home. Give Dylan a full game week of prep for the Wildcats, and we should be OK.

Just try to win out, but our defense needs a ton of work....

Couldn't agree more with Conway.

This was a character building win for the team and another milestone for the program overall. Very businesslike.

One thing I'll add and that is our depth, and the talent and wearwithall of that depth, continues to amaze me.

Thoughts on Clowney and Vic Hampton calling out the defense? I liked it, but a friend of mine who is a former college football player himself said he didn't agree with them doing so.

Clowney has always been sort of quiet, so I was glad the he took a little ownership and challenged the other guys to step up like that, even if it meant he ruffled some feathers.

Also, I think Dylan plays A LOT better on Saturday. It can't be that hard to drop back and hand the ball of to MD28 time and time again, right?

Vic Hampton needs to stop with the profiling and showboating. We're down ten-zip Saturday, he finally assists on a tackle and he runs 15 yards down the field towards UCF's side of the ball acting like an idiot.

That needs to stop. Plus he missed plenty of plays Saturday.

I see what you are saying about Vic. At first, people wanted him to step into the Swearinger role as the talker on defense, but his play doesnt justify it like DJ's did.

Everyone does this now not just USC and I agree it's fricking annoying, go back to the damn huddle and get ready for the next play.

I seriously doubt Wilds will be back for UK after dislocating his elbow. Cooper did the same thing in the preseason and was out for a month or so (different positions and probably circumstances, but still...).

On a side note... I was thinking about our schedule this year and how we only face one team that's not in a AQ FBS conference (Coastal). Is there anyone else in the country who could say the same?

I posted that before I knew it was dislocated. The last I had heard was a "bruise." Hopefully he heals up quickly, because he gives Davis a nice break and is an awesome second back for us.
