Someone put it best in another thread, but it went something like "because they have a history of fence-sitting. They wanted in the Big Ten but wound up in the SEC. They were a slave state who wouldn't commit to the confederacy, and a northern state the Union never trusted. They consider themselves southern, while the south largely considers them midwestern, and most of the state borders Oklahoma, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas."
