I've wondered that too. There have been quite a few loud moments in BDS during Iron Bowls but I always thought growing up that Legion Field was a louder stadium.
BDS has had some games that were every bit as loud as any I had been to in Auburn, LSU, Florida, etc though. 2005 Florida, 2003 Oklahoma, 1999 Mississippi State to name a few were off the charts atmosphere wise.

If that is the case, it could be the acoustics of the stadium. The lower bowl isn't particularly steep, so sound might get a little spread out.
