The funny thing is that Hugh Freeze would be classified as a MSU fan by some Ole Miss fans criteria. He is a hick from Independence, MS who dips Skoal and fishes a lot.

Which is funny because y'all have a douchecannon from Philadelphia (not the one in Neshoba County)who drives a Civic with neon lights and a shitty subwoofer while listening to dubstep and drinking red bull and vodka. He also has a tribal tattoo.

ETA: Y'all tried the "this is our State" and "the people's university" campaigns to appeal to run-of-the-mill Mississippians, the very people you're describing. Additionally, with the TSUN and "grindin' for our state" stuff, y'all tried to portray Ole Miss as something foreign and non-Mississippian...

And then we hired Hugh Freeze.

Exactly. As far as inside the state of Mississippi is concerned the only thing that generally defines fan affiliation is family. In the vast majority of cases kids are going to be fans of the same teams their parents are. Obviously there are exceptions (my family is all state and auburn for example).

Some of the wealthiest most successful people I know are state fans and I only knew so bc of a sign planted in their yard or a rag on their car or their Facebook.
