Our student section is terrible

It looked pathetic at the game after halftime, and I'm sure it looked pathetic on TV as well. Leaving after the third quarter during a blowout, still irks me but it's your ticket.
Leaving at halftime, under any circumstance? Inexcusable.

It's from a lack of leadership in the student body.
Their still kids, they were just looking to get to 5 points early and get their tip in sooner in the evening.

Then don't come to the game at all. Plenty of students that would take their place and stay the whole game. I have no idea how to "fix it", but something needs to change.

Only game I have ever been to there was the UGA game last year and the crowd was loud and didnt sit down the entire game. Little bit of a different situation though.

There ought to be some sort of penalty system set up...make the student tix so that students need to clock out as well as clock in at the turnstiles....if the same students do it for 2 or more home games in a season, then they lose their tickets for the next available home game, or perhaps for the next season entirely.
Only thing I can think of without some solution being instigated from within the student body. But it has been pitiful for several years now....

our student section only stays against Georgia, Florida, and clemson. Or if it's a top 25 opponent.

Maybe they'll use this as a learning lesson to not leave games before the final whistle. They missed a great game at the end by assuming the big lead would hold up. They're young, they'll learn that a big lead a WB is never a guarantee that drinking can commence... but that staying can make the drinking more necessary...

The UT game last year was the worst I've ever seen. People had left before Lattimore got injured and that happened early in the 2nd Quarter. The game was close throughout and yet half the student section had left by the Hampton got the pick to win the game.

I agree. Worst student section in my memory ... ever. They have to be the worst ever.
All SC related radio sports programs should be bombarded with complaints before the Kentucky game.
We should all call-in, including WUSC, 107.5 The Game, etc., and rail on those whiny, spoiled, worthless little pukes.

Let me get this straight. We give a teenager something for free and then bitch because he doesn't value it? The fix is simple make them not free anymore. Or Make them turn in the ticket before leaving. If they " forget", don't turn it in or leave early then they are no longer eligible. If it were such a big deal the Uni could very easily fix it. I guess it only matters to a few?

Anyone know what the student section is like at other SEC schools when one of the doormat programs is in town?

And the students are whiny? How are the students whiny? You're the one whining.
quote:I guess you're right but if being spoiled is being used to winning then I guess its a good thing, huh?

One of our writers at the place I work at just put this article out, feel like this represents most of what other fans feel right now.

That wasn't a Truth Bomb, it was a f'ing Truth Apocalypse. These kids don't remember the '99 year, they don't recall the frustration, so they can't connect with the jubilation that is USC football winning home games now.
Before I was a USC student I attended the games with family for 8 years. I saw the Orange Crush wreck Columbia consistently, the loss to Marshall, the Black Out Fail to UF... These wins at home are fantastic, I remember when we sucked, now we don't. Also, if we want to create a big time program, it takes a big time atmosphere. Everybody has to chip in, or at least stop bitching about why we're not "big time."

Well tell your co-worker to stop writing articles with ridiculous exaggerations or the 'garnet report' may start to be taken less seriously than it is now.
Re: Shaw,
Most of y'all (and many of the other fans) that are ragging on the student section, would y'all rather just not have a student section? Y'all know damn well the student section is the driving force for the whole stadium in big game.
Re: Shaw,
quote:So wins over Clemson and Florida in 2011, the big W over UGA in 2012, and the win over Tennessee in 2012 didn't have a full student section?
It’s also likely that he’s never seen the student section full in the fourth quarter of any of those 12 wins.
quote:Without being charged? Students have to pay an 'athletics' fee to be eligible to receive tickets and oh yeah not to mention the $9,000+ in tuition each year.
students who are unable to stand a watch a football game using a ticket that they received without being charged or having to camp out in tents is beyond idiotic.
quote:People are still confused as to what that article was about? Damn. Your coworker must not have done a lot of research because that article wasn't even a list, it was just pictures of student sections from around the country, they were just numbered in order of the slide show, it wasn't a ranking at all.
Before the season began, ESPN compiled a list of the top 20 student sections in the country. Schools like Maryland, Cincinnati, SMU and Harvard made this list.
quote:Yeah actually I think we would. This dude didn't take the time to calm down after the game and wrote this in an angry stupor.
South Carolina wouldn’t crack a list of the top 100
quote:Yep, that'll do it. Its a shame a bunch of middle-aged folks who endured the 98-99 seasons want our program to go through that again just so we can have a fuller student section.
Maybe a few more 1-10 seasons will get the students to stick around.

If you're defending the student section after that game, there is really nothing any of us can say to you to make you see how we feel.
It was pathetic, it looked pathetic, and it was disgraceful. I can only hope that recruits at the game don't change their minds because of selfish students that can't enjoy a football game for 3-4 hours. I know plenty of students that would.

quote:I don't think I made it sound like I was defending the student section. I was pointing out how ludicrous that article is with all the exaggerations. I was also throwing out some facts that some people in this thread are ignoring. Basically this thread tells me that the student section makes or breaks the atmosphere at WB.

Let's be real, whatever I would write right now about my perplexity with the student section last weekend, you wouldn't care about, and whatever your reason for "defending it" (which might not even be your intention.) will fall on deaf ears as well.
However, I bet we both want USC to have an elite football program, I bet we want to create an environment that other teams are mindful to play in, I bet we both hope USC wins a lot of hardware.
When we have home games, a quarter of the stadium leaves before the 2nd half and its the most raucous part of those in attendance, we aren't creating the environment or nurturing the atmosphere to attain those above goals. To do it, everybody, students, alums, sidewalkers, etc... have to do their part and be there.
I meant what I said on my first post on this thread, there's a lack of leadership, that's why students are bolting early. Did y'all know that Ohio State has a Block O Club, where students get "better" seating, but they're "required" to stay the whole game, and lead cheers/chants. Why not here?

Oh you fricked up now, "middle aged"!!!! j/k
Seriously though, I think the point didn't get communicated clearly. It wasn't that he wanted us to go 1-10 so you'll see what it's like, it's really about his hope that we keep improving, getting better and create an environment so that NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.
1 Man can make a difference, I was semi-serious in my first post on this thread, it's about leadership. I think that's what A$AP's co-worker was trying, though aggressively, to accomplish. Rocket, you need to be the ambassador to the student section and help USC, it's a lot to put on your shoulders but if not you, than who?
