As far as eating goes the hardest part is narrowing down the choices. Besides the scenery and history the best part about Charleston is the food.

I never lived in Charleston, but I've been there a lot. I had friends go to CofC and The Citadel, so I visited a bunch when I was in college. My girl and I would skip class to drive down there and go to Hyman's Seafood Company for the she-crab soup. Poogan's Front Porch is also really good. One of the best things about that city is the food, there are good restaurants all over even over in Mt Pleasant.
As far as places to live, have him/her pay the money to stay close to campus, being able to walk everywhere will be well worth it.

where are you, oh sorry your relative, from?
I feel the person who has already decided to go to CofC should know a decent lay of the land.
and it seems odd that they would enlist you to ask this on a message board. I would have to assume the person has friends planning to or already do go to CofC.

I went to undergraduate there, great place. Too many good restaurants to list. I still spend a lot of time there but live in columbia now.

Young kid going because their friends are going because kids do that. Kids don't get off the Xbox and iPhone long enough to actually do their own research and modern recruiters start pipelines into high schools and it seems more like time share pitches by some of the smaller colleges. I think they bought the pitch because several of their classmates did and seems to know little about the school or the lay of the land.

I have relatives not to far away in GA and debating if it is better to stay with them and day visit or go down for a weekend and take the kid to a game in Columbia. Everybody was about 99% sure they would wind up at a SEC school and this was sort of last min. Caught everybody off guard.

Oh sheesh ... I'd have to ask one of my daughters about that. I know they skip around year to year living down there. They start out in the dorm but by their second year they move up, then they move up a little more the next year and finally they end up at the beach or close by.
Tons of good places to eat around the C of C campus.
I've got no clue about sororities. I'd have to ask my wife which ones - because I honestly do not remember. My wife is a Columbia College girl but she knows what the girls were members of, I just can't remember.
We always stayed at our place on the IOP. When we had guests they used stayed with us there unless we were overflowing. The girls liked to have their guests stay at the Embassy there in the Old Citadel Building adjoining campus right there off of the parade grounds.

As far as places to eat Grouches and Hymans are good. I've heard a lot about SNOB but haven't been.
Been a while since I've been to Charleston so I can't provide as much assistance as other who are more familiar

Skip Hyman's that place is garbage.
Poogan's porch, Butcher and Bee, and Hominy Grill are good for brunchy stuff. Moe's Crosstown, Blind Tiger, and Tattooed Moose are great for bar food. My personal favorite is the Green Door it's a creative southeast Asian influenced place.

Hymans is good. Upper King has changed in the last 5 years it has some good bar/restaurants but can get pricy.
You have some good options that are reasonable on market. the smaller cafes are all good but a little more expensive than you wild wings, tbone, wasabi, tsunami, aj shucker ect.
personally, this is a good time of year to go to Reds. Its in MtP over the bridge down colmens blvd. Beer and Liquor is resonable, good is decent and price is ok, the view is awesome.
If i had two days in Charleston Id go to the cafes on market for breakfest, brunch, or lunch both days. Reds atleast one night and a okies on upper king one night.
