I was wondering about our defense against the HNH or pass heavy teams. Do you think it would make sense to use two Spurs in those situations. This is completely hypothetical, obviously.
Theoretically, going into this season we should have Lewis at MLB, Cooper at OLB and Golightley or Diggs at Spur. But then behind them we have Moore, Bryant, Walton, Roberts, Holloman and Johnson at LB and Camara at Spur for backups (and several walk-ons who probably won't figure into this much). I imagine Johnson, Camara and one or two of Bryant, Moore or Walton will probably RS.
Let's say Holloman (MLB), Roberts (OLB) and Diggs (SP) are the backups. They're already cross-training Cooper at Spur and giving Moore, Bryant and even Fleetwood a look there as well. That gives us a lot of talent there however it shakes out.
But the Spur is a hybrid position that is either a LB who can cover the secondary or a safety who can play the run depending on the need. If we're facing a pass heavy team wouldn't having two Spurs on the field at the same time give us an advantage?
It would basically be a 4-1-2-4 setup. The key would be the MLB who would have to be extra solid against the run, but I think it would be an interesting option.

So do you mean like a 4-1-6, or just take out the Will LB for another Spur/Safety.
Either way you'd be looking at taking out an LB to get Diggs on the field. I don't think it would make that much more of a difference.

I don't think I've seen a setup like that called something like that. I think it just might be easier to have the best Spur's and LB's on the field (especially those who are effective at pass coverage) for matchups against passing heavy teams.

That makes since, he would need to be the best athlete on the team and have a sick shuttle time as well as advanced play reading ability.

Well, the Spur is more of a lean to Safety than LB, in theory at least. So having two on the field would be a 4-1-6 of sorts. But they aren't pure safeties, which is why I was thinking 4-1-2-4. But yes, it would be to get more ball hawking players on the field when the other team is putting it in the air more.

That's what I'm saying. If best in coverage are usually going to be two Spurs on the outside then you would pull the OLB to get more hands on the ball. In theory if your playing a team with only a passing game you could replace the MLB instead of the OLB.

This is just theoretical, as I don't know that we have any of the players to do this on team at the moment, but, if the direction of CFB continues to be air obsessed, I think it could be a way for us to stay ahead of the curve. (On paper at least...)

I think it would make more sense if our Will LBs weren't so athletic.
Cooper- 6'2 213
Bryant- 6'0 215
Marquis Roberts- 6'1 225
Skai Moore- 6'2 205
Holloman- 6'2 228
Cooper is slated to start at Will and I'm pretty sure all these guys are working there, at least for now.
If these guy were 240+ then I could see the need to get another Spur sized guy in there but these guys are about the same size as the Spurs we have.

Are the conditioning drills and what not the same for the Spurs as the LBs? Do they train with them or the secondary, or a mix of both. If all three positions are getting the same treatment then rotating them around would be easy enough. Just wondering.

There are differences but I don't think they're huge. One of the players said in a post-practice interview that Will does a lot of things that the Spur does.
Not sure if Spurs meet with the safeties or linebackers. Spurs do have more responsibilities in the passing game but I've always thought that they were a third linebacker with safety skills and size

They crosstrain a lot of the players for multiple positions. Botkin said as much in his last video interview.

Are you speaking more in terms of a dime package or are you saying, "two spurs - one linebacker?"

The second... as long as we don't call it that...
