Was just reading Mark Story's article on the QB battle for this coming season and wanted to pose the question to the board. Who do you think should win? Story covers the pros and cons for each guy here.

Personally, just from what has been seen in the past from those guys Whitlow may be our best option right now under center. He looked damn good in the spring game (granted it was against a thin defense, but still). And even if he's not the most accurate he has the swag right now we need to get things going. He's also had a solid season of baptism by fire under center in the SEC.

I like Smith and Towles but Smith's lack of mobility in the spread worries me, as well as the lingering shoulder injury (he admitted on KSR today that he's certainly not 100% and he opted to not have surgery) and Towles might not be "there" just yet.

Thoughts?

I think Whitlow has the edge right now.

I believe that we'll lose one of them though. That many talented QB's aren't going to stick around without playing time... especially with Barker coming in next season.

I think with Smith's injury, he may eventually end up getting surgery and that'll open things up a bit in terms of staff being able to stagger those guys so we can keep them. I'd like to see them get to a point where they could possible redshirt Barker because that class all together could really do some '07-esque things if they can stay together and healthy.

I also think it's possible that they could move Whitlow around enough that even if someone else wins the spot he'll still be used pretty effectively.

That is possible. There's the new kid, Phillips, as well.

Having too many quality quarterbacks is a good problem to have though.

Absolutely. And I always forget about Phillips.

After seeing how far down the ladder we got last season, I'm certainly not against anything we can do to keep them all on the roster.

I wonder if Towles will become disenchanted and leave after this season, if he doesn't get significant playing time. With Barker coming in next year and Smith and Whitlow both being sophmores, I wonder what will happen.

Right now I still think Towles is our best long term prospect, but that is mostly based upon his high school hype.

Barker, IMO.

I think so too. But it'd be awful nice if Towles could step up and we could RS Barker.

UK's past of wearing out freshmen by trial of fire is something I hope does not happen to this kid. It is like horse trainers who run horses too early or too much and they break down in their 3 yo season.

Redshirting him would be ideal. I'm sure the coaches will keep that on the table.

Just to add to the topic at hand, per reports from today's practice Max Smith is getting limited snaps in practice because of his shoulder.

Not surprising. They probably want to be cautious.

I have a feeling Max's injury prone nature will keep him off the field the majority of the time, which would be a shame.

I think so. I do wonder if he's the third QB that Stoops is talking about below though.

From the Practice Thread:

quote:

The staff has been very reluctant to give clues about who is standing out thus far, but Stoops said Tuesday that the equal-reps situation may not last too much longer. “If 1 and 2 separate themselves from 3, yeah, we need to start doing that as we get closer to game time,” he said.

Also had this to say about Smith specifically:

quote:

“We’re limiting his number of throwsl,” Stoops said. “He seems to be doing fine so far.” Asked if he was concerned about the situation moving forward, Stoops said: “Absolutely we’re worried about injury. Just like last year, we know what can happen here with injuries, especially at quarterback, so we’ve got to have a lot of guys ready. Again, right now he seems to be fine, but we’re being a little bit cautious with him and limiting some of his throws.”

I think with our thin receiving corps, that ultimately Towles will be the starter and Whitlow will see snaps as a flanker/slot receiver type player long term.
