I do not have an answer to this question. When I read Gene Stalling's quote " The bottam line, in my opinion, his[Saban] players play better than your players. That is the main reason they win." That statement made me wonder how his teams do in games when his players are not the better players. When he had to win on schemes and game day coaching, when his team was the underdog--How did he do? I know that he did not match up in the pros.I feel there are 4or5 coaches in SEC that would also dominate with his players.

Getting talent is a great start, but there are plenty of teams that have tons of talent that manage to lose games or underperform.

Coaching great players is differnet than coaching scrappy underdogs, an entirely different set of challenges exists.

Saban clearly gets about the most you can out of the talent.

Unlike some teams who have let mountains of talent come and go and seemingly can't get over the hump.

Pretty sure they were underdogs in 2008 UGA, 2008 UF, 2009 UF... since then, I doubt they've been an underdog at all.

ETA: maybe at LSU in 2010?

Same with every top tier program. It's not like Alabama has the talent to run the good LSU, Georgia, and Florida teams off the field. He has to coach in those games.

his teams aren't the underdog very often. but he turned around a historically shitty Michigan State with lesser recruits than others in the conference. Got LSU to the SEC championship in his second season with the previous coach's recruits. Went 12-2 in his second year at alabama with the previous coach's recruits.

i'd say the players play better due to coaching as much as the fact that they are great recruits.
