They had Lemonier as a 4th rounder. Got selected in the 3rd.

In the discussion they hint at character concerns. I never heard anything of that type about Elam, unless they're talking about the Driskel/Brissett issue, but that doesn't seem like it would be that relevant to a competent draft team.
Of course, this is the Cowboys we're talking about so I'm not sure "competent" would apply.

Definitely a hurdle. He was the best defender on the field IMO.

You'll miss his leadership more than anything. The athletes are there. Maybe play Seth Fruge early in the year to have an emotional field leader that's been around while the young guys adjust.
By game 7 or 8 freshman don't play like freshman anymore anyways. I really wish A&M had LSU early in the year
