Seeing as how Slive has expanded the conference to cover one-fourth of the country's geographic footprint now, you would think he would understand that rotating venues are sort of an obvious solution.

Obvious to who? Have you been to a SEC basketball tourney and actually seen who is sitting in the seats? Why would you have it in say Houston when the majority of the fans who actually travel are far away and the closer teams will not send large numbers of folks. A place like Tampa is close to nobody and the closest team (Gators) do not travel well for basketball. If you want to view this logically then rank the SEC schools based on fans traveling and home venue attendance from 1 to 14 (with 1 being best or UK) and then look at locations that fit well with the 1 - 6 schools.

Just guessing but Tampa and Houston would be terrible for SEC travel numbers for college basketball.
