Relf 2.0?
Better than Relf?
I know literally nothing about the kid.
I see many a Grinder lately speaking as though this guy is really something special. I'm just curious about what this is based upon.

When you say "pretty good," what do you mean?

Good Arm, smart, has good instincts running the read option. He is the prototypical QB we have been missing from Mullen's offense.

Enough to hit the wide open deep routes we had in 2011 that would have changed our season -- which Relf overthrew by 5 yards prettymuch every time

He throws the deep ball better than Russell. That's why you've seen such an effort by us to stock up on taller, deep threat receivers in the past 2 classes for him. That's the one pass that Russell struggles with...
That said, I don't know that there are many in the country that throw the short stuff any better than Russell in general. He was threading a needle to receivers that couldn't get any separation all season last year -- outside of the meltdown that happened in the last two games.

I agree that Dak is a better passer than Relf, but I really wish he had been able to go through spring practice. Hopefully he will be back to 100% for summer camp and get in some solid reps.
There is nothing I want more, though, than for Cord to be on campus this fall, however unlikely it may be at this point.

Every QB has been an improvement on the previous and always hailed as The Second Coming so it's always a let down. At State we always look toward the next guy but in this case I think he might actually live up to the hype.

As a prospect coming out of high school, he is possibly one of the best we have ever had. Until we can see both play in the SEC, though, can't really tell at this point.

My opinion? He is a better fit for our offense than Tyler is, and he will be better than Tyler when it's all said and done. You can't really bench a back up for a solid starter unless you have the balls of Harbaugh, which Mullen doesn't. I know a couple of coaches on our staff that think Dak should start over Tyler.

His release isn't quite as quick as Tyler's, and he's just a little bit slower on the decision making. On a whole though he is much better than Relf as a passer, and his athleticism is simply on a different level than Tyler's, so he can usually make up the time.
Running wise he's about 6'2 225-235 of muscle, he doesn't have any chub on him like Relf did, so he's not really as big a body as Relf was but he's much stronger, along with being a hell of a lot faster. He's not really as much of a scrambling quarterback as much as he is an option quarterback. He's not going to sit still, and he can scramble, but saying he's the same type of guy as Johnny Manziel simply isn't true.
Overall if you put both of them on a 7 on 7 team, Tyler will be much better. However, Dak is much better all-around guy who gives us an extra running dimension while not sacrificing much of a passing game. As someone who knows and has worked with the guy personally, he's also got an infallible work ethic in the weight room and on the field. You'll never hear a bad thing about him from anybody on the staff or our team.
And before somebody says some BS like "The Back-up Quarterback is always the hardest worker on the team." or something like that, this guy is legit. When the team broke up into smaller teams to compete with one another in events Dak was the only freshman(Technically a RsFr, but there weren't any Sophomore's either) to be named a team-leader, and also the only person to be team-leader who wasn't a starter.
