Good news, but I was hoping to see a brand new stadium in a location over-looking the river.

This is a possibility. It discusses that in the article although it looks like an upgrade is probably what is going to happen.

One of the reasons the PTB may want to keep the stadium at its present spot is because of the history.

It's named for Joe Sewell, former Bama baseball player and head coach, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1977.



Also, the New York Yankees played an exhibition game at Bama in the stadium back in the 1978.

Reggie Jackson actually played at the Joe.





Bert Bank, Billy Martin, George Steinbrenner and Paul Bryant are seen prior to the 1978 exhibition game between Alabama and the New York Yankees at Sewell-Thomas Field in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
