How many times has the preseason #'s 1 & 2 teams made it to the end of the season at #'s 1 & 2???
Not very many.
So by your definition. If a team doesn't start the preseason #1 or #2, then they "backed into a national title."
Because the team that replaces them will have had to have the teams ahead of them lose.

let's be honest. that rematch without winning your division was a fricking highway robbery.
