Mel Kiper: Exodus of players takes LSU out of contention in 2013

Heard him on ESPN radio this morning so no link. Sorry. This is as close to a direct quote as my feeble memory will allow me but I'm pretty sure this is pretty close to word for word.
"With the mass exodus of players from LSU declaring for the draft, this really takes LSU out of contention next year to me and drops them to at least 3rd in the SEC West behind Alabama and Texas A&M."

LSU has assured us that losing 18 starters is no big deal. They'll reload and be just as good.

This may very well be true, but Todd McShay and Mel Kiper need to quit trying to be CFB prognosticators. It's clear the past few years they think they know something more about the college game, yet it rings hollow with me.
ETA: They're individual talent evaluators.

They'll be fine as long as Mett stays. Apparently he plays out of his mind against Bama.

So only 6 starters? That's not too bad....

....that and the Miles factor.

Yeah but most started for two years. I'm trying to wrap my head around the 2013 starters who are returning. The DE position will lose a ton of talent. The DL will be solid, perhaps the deepest area of the team with OL. Minter at LB is a huge loss, bigger than the others IMO. But he only started 15 games in his career. The DBs will lose its two experienced leaders.
I expect a drop off in play. Nothing over the cliff but a drop off nonetheless.

Reasonable,IMO.But history has taught us things don't always turn ou the way you believe they will.

His conclusion (that LSU won't be contending) is probably correct, but his reasoning sucks. LSU will reload and the young defense should only cost one game (Georgia). It won't be the deciding factor for the Alabama and Texas A&M games, they're both in November.

We saw this after the 2007 season. 2008 was absolutely terrible.
Also somewhat after the 2010 season. 2011 was pretty good.
Nothing like 10 underclassmen leaving but a loss of many starters.

2008 was a combination of young defense and gross incompetence by the defensive coaching staff. The comparison to the 2010/2011 transition is closer, but also overstated (we know the last couple of recruiting classes have been good, but we don't know that they're THAT good yet)

LSU is deep on big physical guys ready to fill in.
I would worry about their offense and the play calling....not who is leaving.

Excellent and valid point.

Never trust a guy that thinks Jimmy Clausen has elite NFL talent and wears his hair like Conway Twitty

This may be the most valid point I have heard in this thread.
