Scenario 1: Luke Joeckel goes pro

QB: Manziel, Davis
HB: Malena, B. Williams, T. Williams, Carson
WR: Evans
WR: Kennedy, L. Williams
WR: Walker, Holmes
WR: Pope, J. Williams
TE: Hicks, Clear
LT: J. Matthews, Stuckey
LG: Harrison, Tipoti
C: M. Matthews, Compton
RG: Ifedi, Gutekunst
RT: Ogbuehi, Cheek, Klinke (redshirting/ankle)

WDE: Alexander, Points, Tl. Taylor
DT: Ennis, Robinson, Hatten
NT: Stansbury, Manukainu
SDE: Obioha, A. Williams
WOLB: Jenkins, Tn. Taylor, Wade
MLB: Baggs, Flowers, Chevis
SOLB: Sanders, Richmond, Richardson (redshirting/spine)
CB: Everett, Sezer
FS: Marshall, Raven, Burns
SS: H. Matthews, Franklin
CB: Harris, Jacobs

Scenario 2: Luke Joeckel stays (defense unchanged)

QB: unchanged
HB: unchanged
WR: Evans, M. Joeckel
WR: unchanged
WR: unchanged
WR: unchanged
TE: unchanged
LT: L. Joeckel, Stuckey, Gutekunst
LG: Harrison, Tipoti
C: M. Matthews, Compton
RG: Ogbuehi, Ifedi
RT: J. Matthews, Cheek, Klinke (redshirt/ankle)

Here's some reasoning:

1. All rumors I've seen have Showers transferring, Askew, Ward, Johnson, Honeycutt, and Gardiner not back.

2. I think that it would be best to redshirt Shep Klinke to recover from his ankle surgery. That way, in the 2014 season, he and Cedric Ogbuehi would start at Tackle.

3. Michael Richardson just had spinal surgery. Don't count on him playing next year.

Clear will be the #1 TE after the first day of practice. Hicks is a scrub in comparison.

Stuckey is going to redshirt. He's only played 2 years of football really and isn't ready. I wouldn't even include him on the depth chart as I think guys like Cheek, Ifedi, and Gutekunst will all get shots at tackle before him this year. I think he shirts unless both OTs leave (which isn't going to happen)

quote:

WDE: Alexander, Points, Tl. Taylor

Points isn't a WDE. He's a SDE now and probably becomes a DT. I was told we are strongly considering moving Obioha here.

NT: Stansbury, Manukainu

Stansbury has never played inside. I think Zo Williams is more likely to be moved but think this is Polo's spot barring something surprising with Ivan backing him up in the spring. I think if Manning comes in prepared he may start as a true fish though.

quote:

WOLB: Jenkins, Tn. Taylor, Ward

Ward...I wouldn't count on. Also I'm not sure how we plan to use the Taylors but I don't think Will is eithers position. You are leaving out Wade who will probably immediately be 2nd team here.

quote:

FS: Marshall, Burns

Burns? Has he ever played? Even Honeycutt got into the Cotton Bowl. I think it's safe to say both Raven and Honeycutt are ahead of him here. Hurd is really a nickel (and I assume that's where we'd play Raven) but he would be too. I expect Burns will transfer if he wants to play.

Finally, I don't think the coaches are all that high on Klinke. And I'd be relatively surprised if he ever starts for us again. Ogbuehi will start somewhere but it may not be tackle. I think Cheek vs the young guards is going to be the battle in the spring.

Why do you think this is wrong?

You think that Joecekl will beat out Davis for backup?

Showers is gone so it will be either M Joeckel or Davis, Davis is more athletic.

1) Showers is only rumored to leave. I think people are writing him off too soon. He may yet stay
2) Joeckel is better than Davis (I know no one wants to hear that because they love Matt Davis but it's not even close at the moment)

Why would he stay? There is nothing for him here. The smoke around him leaving is way too much for there not to be fire.

What do you base this on? Also, if true, that doesn't mean it will be the case come next fall. Davis is without a doubt the more athletic of the two, and he has Summer and Fall camps to improve on any areas of weakness; you also have to look of the dynamics that Matt will never start here. There is a possibility that Davis may have a chance to start so it would be prudent to get him more mop up time.

With Stewart possibly going to the MLB and Hill anything but solid in his commitment, you could be looking at Davis having a significant shot at starting at some point.

I think that there is about a 50/50 shot that Davis is #2 instead of Joecekl at this time. Will all depend on camps.

This is post-SPRING, people.

This only includes players expected to be on the roster between now and late-April.

That is part of the discussion ... tmc seems to believe that Showers will be on the team still.

Your response has me thinking that you don't believe M Joeckel will be on the team? I thought you had Davis beating him out for Back up QB, now I am not sure?

I had Matt Joeckel moving to WR/TE if Luke stays and off the team if he doesn't.

Ahh forgot seeing that ... I think you need to flesh out your QB depth chart a little bit more ... no way we role with only 2 QBs and even is Kohl and/or Kenny Hill end up on campus I don't see us burning one of their shirts.

I think Matt stays regardless of what Luke does and stays as either the #2 or #3 QB depending on how Summer and Fall ball goes.

Like I said, I see it 50/50 between David and Matt J as to who wins the #2 spot.

With our WR class and with Cleare and Hicks at TE Matt J would be better utilized as QB regardless if it is as the #2 or #3 playing mainly scout team minutes.

here's the deal with Showers. He has 3 options if he wants to transfer:

- transfer today, sit out next year, and have 1 year left to play
- graduate in August, go to another school and play immediately. The NCAA rule allows you to play one and only one season in this case
- graduate next December, transfer, go thru spring drills with a new school and use his last year there

And of course he can finish out his career with A&M. Even if he decides to transfer, he's probably best off doing the last option anyway (as he can delay his decision to see if JFF gets hurt, goes pro, etc)
