3-4 defense for Mizzou next year??

I know GP does not like change but we are pitifully thin at DT, as we all know. Hoch and Vincent have some playing time. I have no idea if Foster saw the field. Brantley is a RSFR. Two DT recruits.
If we do not get any JUCO DT's that can come right in and play we are in deep deep shite!!
Looking at the roster we have at least 9 LB's who could see some playing time. But Wilson and Bonner are the only two that I know got alot of playing time.
Would we have to go to a 3-4 out of necessity for the next 2 years??

Unfortunately, I don't think we have the personnel we would need to go to a 3-4. We don't have a Jesse Williams-like nose tackle. I know we're thin, but when you move to a 3-4, your guys have to be bigger than we are. We may have to go that direction, but I don't think it'll be effective for us.

This is pretty accurate. As far as the 3-4 scheme, yes you need big bodies to take up O-linemen. AJ Logan at 310 lbs. could anchor the middle. He is an incomming freshman though. I think the bigger concern would be in the LB position if they did go to a 3-4 scheme. I don't know if we have the kind of LB's that would be able to cover. They would need size and speed as they would be the ones making most of the tackles.
I just don't see Steckel revamping his scheme to much.
I like the 3-4 but you need the right players to be successful.

DT situation could change drastically.. let's wait and see.

Excellent post Semo. The ONLY way we could run a 3-4 is if we get the Hutch dts.

Hoch can add another 10-15lbs and so can Vincent. Problem is none of them have probably never played nose guard.
Does Hutchenson CC play a 3-4?

Not sure. Its not just having a big guy. Its having someone on the nose that can disrupt and command double teams.

Exactly. They'd have to be bigger, and the LBs would have to be faster and better at covering. It would be a complete revamp, and I don't see Steckel doing this. But, if we are able to get these DTs, that could potentially change.

No way we are changing. Just pray the Hutch DTs come through for us.

you must not be aware of how a 3-4 defense works. If you are thin on DTs, that would be the last thing in the world you would want to do.
To run a 3-4, you essentially need to play 3!!! DTs at the same time. That requires more, not less, DTs. To be effective, you need a NT that is about 330lbs and two other DTs at around 290lbs+. Then you play your pass rushing DE at OLB.
We would get crushed if we tried to play a 3-4.

6'4" 275-285 is a small DT. Big DE's but small DT's in the SEC.
The bottom line is bad recruiting and bad player evaluation has put Missouri in a tough tough situation.
And why have we had so much trouble the last several years getting DT's?? Take Big Sheldon out of the equation and the last few years have been sorry for the DT class.

A good friend who's an Alabama fan explained it really simply to me one time. In the Big 12, we put the best athletes on offense, because it's an offense-centric league. In the SEC, the best athletes are always on defense. I think the coaches have figured this out, and are trying to focus on some talented defensive players, as well as linemen.
But we won't have the personnel to run a 3-4 anytime soon.

I know the 3-4 will not happen.....
But to say we have no one comming in that has the potential is slightly incorrect. I pointed out AJ Logan earlier. I have watched film on this kid and he has the size to perform or solidify the middle. I think I remember watching him split double teams and make tackles.
But to be fair, Steckel has a system in place and to me works pretty well. He's a few players away from having a real good defense.

Steckel can't stop the pass to save his life. He is not the answer.

Is it Steckel or GP who insists on the DB's playing 5-7 yards off the receiver at the LOS?
Serious question, because this and the fact that the DB's haven't turned their head while covering a pass in 5 years drives me nuts on the regular.

Why does it matter? When they play press man they get beat on slants and over the top all day. We are terrible in pass D in everything we do including zone, m2m, press or soft coverage.

So, is it a personnel issue or a coaching issue?
Seems as though we never have big recruits in the secondary.
