True.
But it was always 6 teams. And that even number of power teams meant splitting into two divisons was feasible.
When divisions were created it was necessary to balance the divisions by putting half of the Big Six in each division. This is precisely why the Big XII failed and why the B1G is struggling with their poorly contrived divisions that make no geographic sense. The Big XII was really the Big 3 and it's very hard to divide 3 evenly. Try it sometime. So Nebraska just left. You have to use a mnemonic device just to remember who is in the B1G divisions. Everyone knows that shite just isn't sustainable.
It's simple, rational and it works.
