Remember when Kevin Steele was the hot name at Alabama and was the next big thing? He went to Clemson and his defenses sucked every year and he got fired last year!
Alabama is GREAT because of Saban and Saban ONLY! A friggin' 36 year old defensive coordinator that Saban promoted after Steele left is not the reason why.
You seem to be severely mistaken on what happened with Steele at Alabama. He spent one season at Alabama as DC before losing his job to KIRBY SMART. He as then re-labeled as "Associate HC - Defense" (a BS title to mask an obvious demotion) before he was more or less pushed out, at which point he took a DC job at Clemson (ie: a move DOWN).
How the frick do people keep using Steele as some sort of anti-Smart argument? If anything, what happened is that Saban realized that Smart was a much more competent candidate to be his right-hand man and promoted him accordingly. Steele wasn't some "Saban disciple"...the guy lasted as DC for one fricking season.

Yeah, I agree with this.
I also think Smart would be vastly preferable to Gus.
But a MUCH greater risk than a proven winner as in BMFP.
