Keep in mind, South Carolina had a very mediocre history before Spurrier got there. They didn't even have a bowl win until 1995. When Spurrier left Florida, he was completely burnt out. The expectations were ridiculous and he was tired of dealing with the pressure. That's why the South Carolina job appealed to him. It was a job with a fanbase that had very modest expectations. If he did well, he would be worshiped there. If he didn't do well, their fans wouldn't be too hard on him because all of their other coaches had failed. Also, South Carolina was considered a sleeping giant because their fan base is terrific and their state has a lot of in-state talent. It was a place where he had a decent shot at having success and enhance his legacy. That's why he never would have taken the LSU job. Their fan base is even more unrealistic than the Gators fan base and the program was already built up by Saban so Spurrier wouldn't get a lot of credit for winning with them. He wanted to build a program up from nothing than be another cog in a football factory like LSU.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Spurrier came to South Carolina because he likes BUILDING a winner. He knew South Carolina has been terrible and wanted to come in and make something of them. Not go to some place where he would just show up and win.

He came to South Carolina because he knew it would be a tough place to win.
