True, but I'm talking about the initial donation to even get enough priority to get the opportunity, plus the season donation, plus the tickets.

Maybe that's was somehow the case, but that was also Alabama coming off a title with high hopes. For most other schools with slightly less demand, I think you'd be better off buying a season package from a third party. Better yet, I'd just buy tickets to the 2-3 decent games and get the scrub teams for 20 bucks outside the stadium.
